Godzilla Minus One (2023) Movie Plot and Ending Explained: What Happens and What It Means

Godzilla Minus One is a 2023 Japanese monster drama centered on Koichi Shikishima, a failed kamikaze pilot haunted by survival. He joins a civilian effort that appears to destroy a giant irradiated Godzilla, then chooses to live rather than die in another suicide attack.

The title refers to postwar Japan. The country has lost the war and fallen to zero, and Godzilla drives it further down, to minus one. The story is about rebuilding life from that point.

Who is Shikishima and how does he meet Godzilla?

Shikishima lands his fighter on Odo Island during the final days of World War II. He claims engine trouble, but he has avoided a suicide mission. At night a smaller, dinosaur-like Godzilla attacks the garrison and kills almost everyone except Shikishima and mechanic Sosaku Tachibana. Shikishima returns to firebombed Tokyo consumed by guilt.

He shelters a young woman, Noriko Oishi, and an orphaned baby, Akiko, but refuses to call himself their husband or father. He takes dangerous work clearing naval mines, which keeps him near the sea where Godzilla is growing. American atomic tests mutate Godzilla into a much larger and more powerful form. Shikishima faces it again during a minesweeper mission and freezes. The crew survives, but Shikishima sees the encounter as another failure to act.

Why does the Ginza attack change everything?

Godzilla comes ashore in Tokyo and marches through Ginza. Tanks, artillery, and a cruiser cannot stop it. The attack shows that conventional weapons only anger the creature. Noriko pushes Shikishima into an alley and takes the blast herself.

She is presumed dead. Shikishima now has one clear motive: avenge her and end his guilt through a final sacrifice. The government cannot respond strongly, and foreign powers do not intervene. Former naval officers and private citizens therefore design their own civilian operation. The plan depends on volunteers, borrowed ships, and improvised science rather than an army.

How does the civilian plan to kill Godzilla work?

The team lures Godzilla into Sagami Bay with a decoy ship. Their goal is to injure it through rapid pressure change, not gunfire. The steps are direct: Shikishima volunteers to fly an explosive-packed fighter into Godzilla's mouth. Tachibana prepares the plane but secretly installs an ejection seat.

Shikishima wants to die with Godzilla, while Tachibana wants him to survive. The trap partly works. Godzilla sinks, breaks free, then rises again. Shikishima flies into its mouth, ejects at the last moment, and the explosion blows off Godzilla's head. Ships keep firing while its atomic heat ray overloads, and the body crumbles into the sea.

  • sink Godzilla deep with cables and freon-gas canisters
  • release the cables and inflate balloons to drag it upward fast
  • force tissue damage through sudden decompression
  • strike the wounded creature before it can regenerate or fire its heat ray

What does the ending mean?

Shikishima survives ejection and reunites with his crew. He then learns Noriko survived in a hospital. He rushes to her, holds Akiko with her, and finally accepts a future instead of punishment. The film rejects the wartime demand for noble suicide.

Noriko, Tachibana, and the minesweeper crew repeatedly tell Shikishima to live. His survival is the victory, not his death. Uncertainty remains by design. Noriko has a dark moving mark on her neck, which suggests exposure to Godzilla's regenerative flesh. Beneath the ocean, a piece of Godzilla begins to regrow.
