Search smarter
Tips for a film you can’t quite place
Start with one image, not the plot
Plot memories drift over the years. A single vivid shot — a red coat, a flooded hallway, a face at a window — is usually far more accurate, and far more searchable.
Date it from the texture
Film grain, aspect ratio, car shapes, hairstyles and phone models place a film within a decade much faster than trying to recall an actual release year.
Quote it exactly, in quotation marks
Search engines match exact strings. Putting a remembered line in quotes finds the script far more reliably than a paraphrase of what you think was said.
Search the face you half-recognise
The supporting actor you can almost name narrows the field better than the lead you cannot. Cast lists are indexed thoroughly; vague plot summaries are not.
Pair a setting with an object
One detail is rarely enough. “lighthouse” is far too broad, but “lighthouse” plus “typewriter” usually is not. Two specifics beat one strong one.
Remember where you watched it
A particular channel, streaming service or format — VHS, an in-flight screen, late-night television — cuts the possibilities down dramatically before you search at all.
