Movie Reissue Box Office: Original-Release Gross vs Lifetime Gross Explained

Original-release gross counts only money from a film's first theatrical run. Lifetime gross adds every later Special Edition and re-release to that first-run total. Lifetime gross is the sum of separate release groups. Readers comparing records need to know which number a chart quotes.

How do trackers divide one movie's gross?

Box Office Mojo separates a film into release groups. It lists Original Release alongside dated Special Edition and Re-releases, each with domestic, international and worldwide grosses that sum to a lifetime total, as shown on the Avatar title page.

Avatar shows how the split works. About $2.744 billion worldwide came from its Dec 2009-Jan 2010 original release, plus about $44.8 million from the 2010 Special Edition and about $58 million from the 2021 China re-release, before later reissues.

Can a reissue change the all-time No. 1?

Yes. Avengers: Endgame took the nominal worldwide record in July 2019 at about $2.797 billion.

Avatar then reclaimed it at about $2.802 billion after earning about $12.3 million in two days from its March 2021 China re-release, as TheWrap reported in its account of Avatar retaking the record. Large-format screens supplied much of that return. IMAX reported $6.2 million from the same China re-release, about 30% of that weekend, lifting its own lifetime earnings from Avatar to $249.5 million, according to IMAX in its China re-release earnings notice.

What does an anniversary re-release add?

It adds a smaller amount to a much larger lifetime figure. Titanic's 25th-anniversary re-release in February 2023 added about $48 million worldwide, taking its lifetime total to about $2.243 billion, while Avatar: The Way of Water simultaneously passed it for No.

3 all time, as Screen Daily reported in its global box-office ranking update. All-time charts generally rank nominal lifetime worldwide grosses. Decades-old films can therefore swap places years later when a reissue is added.

Why check which gross is quoted?

A reissue weekend is accounted separately from lifetime gross. An Avengers: Endgame re-release weekend, for example, was reported apart from its much larger lifetime domestic gross.

Trackers can also misallocate reissue money. Box Office Mojo's handling of Titanic's small 2020 reissue temporarily inflated its lifetime total to $2.202 billion before correction. Always match the weekend figure to the weekend, and the lifetime figure to the ranking.
