Topher Grace’s 85-Minute Star Wars Movie Edit: What He Cut From the Prequels

Topher Grace condensed the Star Wars prequel trilogy into a single 85-minute fan edit, a re-cut made from released footage. He cut most of The Phantom Menace, comic side characters, and political exposition to focus on Anakin Skywalker's fall. The edit brings Episodes I-III together as one tragedy. It keeps Anakin's training, his bond with Obi-Wan Kenobi, his marriage to Padmé Amidala, and Palpatine's manipulation.

What is the edit trying to do?

The prequels follow Anakin from slave boy to Darth Vader. The edit treats that change as the main plot and removes material that pulls away from it.

That approach favors scenes where Anakin makes choices. Jedi training, fear of loss, secrecy about Padmé, and trust in Palpatine stay central. Senate procedure, trade disputes, and separate comic adventures do not.

What was cut from The Phantom Menace?

Episode I loses the most time. The edit keeps only enough childhood material to establish Anakin's talent, kindness, and separation from his mother.

  • Jar Jar Binks comedy and Gungan battles
  • Podrace buildup and Tatooine detours
  • Republic Senate debate and trade-federation mechanics
  • Explanations of midi-chlorians and prophecy detail

What was trimmed from the next two films?

Attack of the Clones keeps Anakin and Padmé's relationship, but shorter. Flirtation, meadow scenes, and much of the factory, arena, and clone-mystery investigation fall away.

Revenge of the Sith stays closest to its original shape. The edit preserves Palpatine's grooming of Anakin, the turn against the Jedi, the duel with Obi-Wan, and the birth of Luke and Leia. Shorter battles, fewer creatures, and less exposition remain around those events.

Can you watch it?

The cut was made for private study and small screenings, not public release. Copyright in the underlying films prevents lawful public streaming, download, or sale.

Viewers interested in the idea can study the same principle legally. Pick one character arc, keep scenes where that character chooses, and skip subplots that do not change the choice. That exercise shows why Grace kept Palpatine's persuasion scenes and removed much of the surrounding spectacle.
