The crime roles that made him
Goggins broke out as corrupt Detective Shane Vendrell in FX's The Shield from 2002 to 2008. He appears in 88 to 89 episodes as a central Strike Team member, according to The Movie Database cast listing. Shane is volatile, loyal, and self-destructive.
His partnership and clash with Vic Mackey drives much of the series. He then starred as Boyd Crowder in FX's Justified. Boyd begins as a recurring white-supremacist bank robber in season 1. He grows into a main-cast Harlan crime boss across seasons 2 to 6 opposite Raylan Givens.
Two sharp Tarantino turns
Goggins plays Billy Crash in Django Unchained from 2012. Crash is the vicious Candieland plantation overseer and Django's personal tormentor. Collider places his screen time at about 8.5 minutes in Collider's breakdown of the Tarantino roles.
The brevity makes the menace stand out. He reunited with Tarantino as Chris Mannix in The Hateful Eight from 2015. Mannix claims to be Red Rock's new sheriff. He is one of eight confined strangers, mixing Southern bluster, suspicion, and survival cunning.
Where the comedy clicks
Goggins co-starred as Lee Russell in HBO comedy Vice Principals for two seasons in 2016 to 2017. Russell handles curriculum and forms an unholy alliance with Danny McBride's Neal Gamby. He is conniving, vain, and oddly vulnerable.
He plays Baby Billy Freeman across HBO's The Righteous Gemstones from 2019 to 2025. Baby Billy is the former child-star brother-in-law to John Goodman's Eli Gemstone. The role mixes showbiz delusion, comedy, and pathos.
Prestige drama and voice work
Goggins starred as Rick Hatchett in The White Lotus Season 3, set in Thailand in early 2025. Rick is a grieving man seeking revenge for his father. The performance earned 2025 Emmy and 2026 Golden Globe supporting-actor nominations.
He voices Cecil Stedman in Prime Video animated series Invincible from 2021 to present. Cecil directs the Global Defense Agency and organizes superhero responses. The role deepened in Season 2, adding weary pragmatism.
Where should you start?
