Who lives on the island?

Isla and Sandy are siblings isolated for 30 years since their parents disappeared. They hunt birds, trade stories and talk to mythical beings.

Their world runs on gull lore and invention, including a Tolkienesque tale called The Lord of the Local Authority. Sundance synopsizes this closed life as the starting point before an official arrives to relocate them in its awards announcement.

Why does Daniel arrive?

Daniel is an awkward Northeastern Scottish Council worker sent by his boss Ros to evict the siblings. Their home sits inside a gull preserve and their residence is deemed illegal.

At first Isla and Sandy resist by trying to literally throw Daniel off the island. They then pull him into their myths, jokes and daily rituals instead of forcing him out.

What cracks the story open?

Near the end Daniel directly challenges Isla's belief that the mainland caused her parents' deaths. The A.V.

Club identifies that argument as the moment mainland-versus-island trauma comes into the open in its review. The challenge is blunt and unsentimental. It strips away lore and forces Isla to defend a story she has lived inside for decades.

How do the final scenes play out?

The climax turns looser and sillier into a physical struggle with the gulls. The staging evokes Hitchcock's The Birds without becoming horror.

Voice-over then takes over the closing passages. That narration carries the viewer past the fight and states what becomes of Daniel, Isla and Sandy as a unit.

What does leaving mean?

Reviewers read the meaning as choosing hope over fear. Leaving is not framed as Paradise Lost.

Isla, Sandy and Daniel grow without erasing what was lost. Practical viewing runs 1h 42m, rated UK 12A and US R:.
