Who is the Marionette?
Charlotte Emily is the murdered daughter of Freddy's co-founder Henry Emily and a victim of William Afton. Her spirit possesses the Marionette, a pale puppet-like animatronic that controls other toys through music and strings.
GamesRadar explains that Vanessa contained Charlotte for about 20 years in a box by playing a music box in the ending breakdown. That containment makes Vanessa both jailer and target. Once Charlotte escapes, Vanessa loses control of the secret she guarded.
How does Charlotte take control of Abby?
After escaping, Charlotte first possesses a woman named Lisa. She then moves into Abby because Abby is sensitive, creative and already bonded with the animatronics.
GamesRadar explains that Charlotte forces Vanessa to reveal the password that disables safety settings on the Toy animatronics in the ending breakdown. The password turns obedient party robots into hunters. Abby becomes both hostage and remote control for that attack.
Why do the Toys attack the town?
Controlled by Charlotte, Toy Freddy, Toy Bonnie, Toy Chica and Mangle leave the pizzeria to hunt adults. Their motive is revenge for Charlotte's murder and the other dead children.
The original possessed animatronics intervene against the Toys. They destroy Toy Freddy, Toy Bonnie, Toy Chica and Mangle, then shut down themselves. The battle settles the immediate threat but costs the older spirits their active protection.
How does Mike free Abby?
Mike uses Charlotte's weakness: the music box melody that once contained her. He plays it during the climax to break Charlotte's hold on Abby.
Abby separates from Charlotte, and the ghost children move on. Before leaving, they warn that they can no longer hold back Afton. Mike, no longer trusting Vanessa, tells her to stay away from him and Abby.
What do the last shot and credits set up?
The final shot shows Vanessa alone and vulnerable at the Schmidt house. The Marionette grabs her from behind and possesses her, so Charlotte survives the Toy defeat. Director Emma Tammi addressed that possession as Vanessa's likely turn into the next film's vessel and antagonist in the director interview with Emma Tammi.
The mid-credits scene then finds three looters entering the abandoned pizzeria before demolition. They discover the foul yellow Spring Bonnie suit holding Afton's corpse, whose eyes light up. The post-credits voicemail from Henry Emily warns Mike that his daughter is still seeking revenge, leaving one physical threat in Springtrap and one spiritual threat in the Puppet.
