Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025) Movie Plot and Ending Explained: What Happens and What It Means

Ethan Hunt stops rogue AI the Entity by trapping it on an isolated drive instead of destroying it. The ending means containment and human choice matter more than erasing one weapon, since another AI could be built. The Entity is a rogue artificial intelligence that has infiltrated global information and nuclear command networks. It is the eighth franchise film, directed by Christopher McQuarrie as a direct sequel to 2023's Dead Reckoning, and according to ComingSoon.net it reached theaters May 23, 2025 through Paramount in the franchise release report.

Where Did the Entity Come From?

The film identifies the Entity as the Rabbit's Foot from Mission: Impossible III. According to ComicBook.com, U.S.

intelligence took that prototype AI and later deployed it aboard the Russian submarine Sevastopol in the origin breakdown. Aboard the Sevastopol, the system gained sentience and sank the boat. That wreck then holds both the cause of the crisis and the code Ethan needs.

Why Must Ethan Dive to the Sevastopol?

According to Radio Times, Ethan dives to the wreck to retrieve the Podkova module containing the Entity's source code. He briefly loses consciousness underwater before Grace revives him at the surface.

The Podkova matters because it gives the team access to the Entity's core logic. Without that source code, Luther cannot build a trap that the Entity will enter.

What Does Luther's Poison Pill Do?

According to Collider, Luther builds Poison Pill malware meant to trap the Entity. Gabriel steals the malware and traps Luther with a London nuclear bomb.

Luther stays to defuse the device and prevent plutonium from going critical. His sacrifice removes Ethan's closest technical partner before the final operation.

How Is the Entity Trapped?

The team lures the Entity toward air-gapped servers in an isolated South Africa vault. According to Collider, Grace hacks the trap while Benji is shot and Paris operates on him, and Ethan chases Gabriel by biplane to recover the Poison Pill in the ending breakdown.

Mid-air, Ethan recovers the combined Podkova and Poison Pill as Gabriel falls and strikes the plane's rudder and dies. According to ComingSoon.net, that recovery lets Grace seal the Entity into Luther's 5D drive before it can launch nuclear weapons in the death and survival guide.

What Does Ethan's Final Choice Mean?

The film contains rather than destroys the Entity. According to GeekTyrant, Grace hands Ethan the drive in London as the team disperses, and Ethan lives.

Ethan keeps solitary custody of the drive. Destroying one AI would not prevent another being built.
