How does inversion work?
Inversion reverses the flow of a person or object through time. A normal fighter moves forward. An inverted fighter moves backward through the same events. The film shows this through turnstiles, large machines that flip direction.
Walk through one way and you move in reverse. Walk through again and you return to normal. Inverted life has strict rules: The key limit is knowledge. You can act inside a past event, but you cannot easily change its fixed outcome.
- You cannot breathe reversed air without a mask.
- Fire feels cold and causes frost-like wounds.
- Actions are already set, so force meets resistance.
Who wants what in the plot?
The Protagonist must recover parts of the Algorithm, a future weapon split into nine pieces. Sator collects the pieces for people in the future. They believe reversing time will save their dying world. Sator uses money, blackmail, and inverted supplies to build power.
He controls Kat through fear and custody of their son. The Protagonist uses Kat to reach Sator. Neil guides the Protagonist through heists in Mumbai, Oslo, and Tallinn. Each mission reveals more of Sator's plan. The team learns Sator will link the finished Algorithm to his own death.
What happens at the final battle?
The final mission is a temporal pincer at Stalsk-12, a closed Soviet city. One Tenet team moves forward through the battle. One inverted team moves backward through it. Both share what they learn across time. Kat travels to Vietnam to stop Sator at his holiday home.
Sator wears a monitor linked to the Algorithm. When his heart stops, the signal will trigger the blast. In the bunker, the Protagonist and Ives fail to reach the device in time. A masked soldier saves them by taking the bullet in reverse. Kat drowns Sator just as Tenet secures the Algorithm. The world survives that moment.
What does the ending mean?
The masked soldier is Neil. He joined the mission backward from a future where the Protagonist recruited him. His final act closes his part of the loop. The Protagonist then understands his larger role.
He is not only an agent of Tenet. He will create Tenet and recruit Neil in the first place. In the last scene, the Protagonist kills Priya to protect Kat and her son. He now acts with full knowledge of cause and effect. The mission ends because he takes control of its beginning.
