Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! reworks Ash and Pikachu's first meeting by replaying the 1997 pilot, then diverting into a new Ho-Oh quest. It keeps the overslept morning, the stubborn Pikachu and the Spearow attack, but replaces Misty and Brock with Verity and Sorrel.
The film is an origin story about young Trainer Ash and Pikachu searching for Legendary Pokémon Ho-Oh. For film viewers, the key change is structure. The opening earns trust through familiarity, then the quest tests partnership on a mythic scale.

How faithful is the morning at Oak's lab?
Like the 1997 pilot, Ash oversleeps at Professor Oak's lab and misses the starter Pokémon. Only a stubborn, disobedient Pikachu remains, and it refuses its Poké Ball, as Pokémon.com notes in its Pokémon.com synopsis.
That cold start matters. Ash starts without choice, leverage or control. He must earn trust instead of ordering it.
What turns Pikachu from burden to partner?
On the road to Viridian City, Ash angers Spearow and exposes both travelers. He shields Pikachu with his body, then Pikachu fires a massive Thunderbolt, a turn TheGamer highlights in its TheGamer analysis.
The scene links pain to loyalty. Protection comes first, power second. That order defines their partnership for the rest of the film.
How do new friends and Ho-Oh redirect the story?
The middle keeps familiar Pokémon rescues but changes the human party. That swap lets the film honor early episodes without replaying old companions.
With Verity and Sorrel beside him instead of Misty and Brock, Ash pursues Ho-Oh. After glimpsing Ho-Oh, he follows the Rainbow Wing toward Mount Tensei, also called the Raizen Mountains. Mythical Pokémon Marshadow guides and tests him as Rainbow Hero lore unfolds, as PokeBeach details in its PokeBeach report.

What does the climax risk — and settle?
Ash is struck down protecting Pikachu from Marshadow-controlled Pokémon. He revives after a vision in which Pikachu speaks human speech to him, as Polygon observes in its Polygon review.
The film sits in an alternate timeline, Wikipedia notes in its film synopsis. Treat Verity, Sorrel and Marshadow as reboot additions, not original-series canon. New viewers can start here; longtime fans should expect familiar beats with different companions.
