Nosferatu (2024) Movie Parents Guide: Age Rating, Violence, Language, Sexual Content, and Scary Scenes

Nosferatu (2024), Robert Eggers' remake of the classic vampire story, is rated R for bloody violence, graphic nudity and sexual content. It pairs gory biting, stabbing and corpses with full-frontal nudity, mild oaths only, sustained dread and possession horror, best for 16 and up.

The age signals agree across systems. The Motion Picture Association requires an accompanying adult for under-17s, as reported by ComingSoon in ComingSoon's report on the MPA rating. Common Sense Media assigns 16+, calling it bloody and deeply disquieting.

What is the official age rating?

The R means no one under 17 is admitted without an adult. The reason given is bloody violent content, graphic nudity and some sexual content. That combination marks it as adult horror, not family fantasy.

In the UK, the BBFC rated it 15 for strong horror, injury detail, violence and sex. Listings also note genital, breast and buttock nudity. Common Sense Media's 16+ verdict, in Common Sense Media's Nosferatu review, points the same way for US parents.

How violent and bloody is it?

Blood is frequent and graphic rather than implied. Expect vampire biting with blood-squirting, stabbing, impalement and detailed corpses. Plague imagery adds piles of bodies and diseased settings.

The tone makes the gore harder to shake. Injury detail is lingered on, and death scenes use grisly close effects. Parents sensitive to blood should treat this as high, not moderate.

What about sex and nudity?

Nudity includes full-frontal male and female nudity, plus breast and buttock nudity noted in UK listings. The BBFC description centers this nudity in its 15 rating for sex, detailed in Odeon's BBFC trailer listing.

Sexual activity is tied to horror, not romance alone. Count Orlok's obsession with Ellen Hutter drives sensual horror-romance scenes and graphic sexual activity. These scenes are intense and likely confusing for younger teens.

How scary is it, and what language is used?

Fear comes mainly from sustained gothic dread. Grotesque undead imagery, rats, plague, seizures and possession episodes build pressure. A few jump-scares punctuate the 132-minute runtime.

Language is the least concern. Dialogue contains several mild oaths rather than frequent strong profanity. Related themes are heavier: occult ritual, possession and death run through the story.

Should your teen watch it?

Do not bring children or younger teens. The R, 15 and 16+ thresholds all signal the same limit: adult horror with blood, nudity and intense dread. Teens who dislike gore, body horror or possession scenes will struggle most.

  • preview first if your teen is 15 to 17
  • check tolerance for blood-squirting, corpses and plague imagery
  • check comfort with full-frontal nudity and Orlok's obsession plot
  • plan a daytime watch and a break during the 132 minutes
