My Downloaded Movie Will Not Play When I Am Offline

Your downloaded movie will not play offline because the app cannot confirm you still have permission to watch it. The video file is on your device, but its playback key needs a recent online check. That key uses DRM, or Digital Rights Management, which links the file to your account and rental terms. When the key expires or never loaded fully, the app blocks playback until you reconnect.

Did the download finish?

A download can look ready when it stopped early. A weak signal, a paused queue, or low storage can leave part of the file missing.

Open the app download screen and check for a full progress bar or completed mark. If storage ran low, free space, reconnect to Wi-Fi, and let the title finish again.

Does the playback permission need a refresh?

Most apps give you a file plus a separate time-limited permission. Subscription downloads need regular check-ins, and rentals allow only a short viewing period after you press play.

Logging out, changing a password, losing a subscription, or passing the viewing window can void that permission. Reconnect briefly to sign in and refresh the title, then start playback for a few seconds before you leave coverage.

Are you in the right app with the right account?

A download plays only inside the app that made it. It will not open in your photo gallery, files app, or a different video player.

Family profiles, second accounts, and device limits cause the same block. Check that you signed in with the account that rented or downloaded the film, and remove old devices if the service limits how many can hold downloads.

How do you lock in playback before a trip?

Test the file while you still have internet. Put the phone in airplane mode, open the app, and press play to prove the license works offline. If the test fails at home, delete the partial file and download it again in the same app and account.

  • Finish the download fully on strong Wi-Fi
  • Sign in and update the app first
  • Open the title once after downloading
  • Keep enough free storage for the license check
  • Bring a charger, since offline playback still drains power
