How the sequels changed the series
The 1987 original earned about $14.5 million in theaters. That result prompted Hellbound: Hellraiser II, which opened Dec. 23, 1988 and earned just over $12 million, according to ComicBook.com the anniversary retrospective.
ComicBook.com notes only four entries played theaters. Films five through ten went direct-to-video, while the 2022 entry arrived as a Hulu original. That path moved the series from theatrical risk to home viewing. Each shift kept Cenobite stories alive for smaller, loyal audiences.
Where are the streaming hits now
The 1987 Hellraiser ranked No. 1 on Tubi's U.S. Top 10 on May 7, 2026. It finished ahead of Creed II, Creed III and Face/Off plus six others, as ComingSoon.net reported the Tubi chart report citing FlixPatrol tracking.
David Bruckner's 2022 Hellraiser surged into Paramount+'s Top 10 in multiple countries during the week of Aug. 10, 2025. Collider tracked the Paramount+ surge that week. Together the charts pair a free older hit with a subscription newer hit. Viewers can sample the theatrical origin and the modern reboot without buying discs.
What makes the 2022 version different
The 2022 Hellraiser debuted directly on Hulu in October 2022. It stars Jamie Clayton as a new Hell Priest, described as a loyal yet evolved re-imagining, as Bloody Disgusting reported via ick.com the producer update. Producer Keith Levine told Bloody Disgusting a follow-up Hellraiser 2 is in development.
He said conversations are underway with Bruckner involved, citing banked Cenobite-design work. That banked design matters for effects-heavy horror. It lets a sequel reuse creatures, molds and concepts without starting over.
