How long is the film?

The 106-minute length makes Dunkirk lean for a large-scale war film. The story moves across land, sea and air without an extended epilogue.

The film was directed by Christopher Nolan. Warner Bros. Pictures distributed it worldwide for theatrical release on July 21, 2017.

Do you need to stay after the ending?

No extra scene plays during or after the credits. JustJared reported that viewers need not stay after the story ends, in the JustJared credits report.

The credits still have two details worth noting. Title credits open the film, followed by a dedication to lives lost at Dunkirk. The end credits note that 12 original 1940 "little ships" reappeared in the film.

Why did it look different in different cinemas?

Nolan shot Dunkirk on IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film for maximum image quality and immersion. Warner Bros. materials reported by ComingSoon describe that film-first approach, in the ComingSoon trailer report.

That choice changed the shape of the picture by venue. The venue set how much image height viewers saw: Taller ratios show more image top and bottom, especially in IMAX. Wider ratios crop that height for standard screens.

  • IMAX 70mm: most scenes at about 1.44:1
  • IMAX digital: about 1.90:1
  • 70mm and DCP: about 2.20:1
  • 35mm prints: 2.35:1

Which version should you watch now?

Home versions include 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, Blu-ray SteelBook editions and 4K digital from Warner Bros. Blu-ray.com lists the releases at 106 minutes from December 2017, in the Blu-ray.com release listings. Availability varies by country and retailer.

Disc designs and digital storefronts also differ by date and territory. For the largest image, choose a surviving IMAX 70mm revival screening where offered. Otherwise buy or stream the 4K UHD or digital version for the sharpest home picture.
