Who is being hunted and why?
Jake leads raids against the returned human bases in the forest. The humans want a new home and target Jake as a rebel leader. They have rebuilt Colonel Miles Quaritch in a Na'vi avatar body with his old memories.
Quaritch hunts Jake by attacking the forest Omaticaya clan. Jake realizes his presence puts the whole clan at risk. He and Neytiri decide to leave rather than bring war to their people.
Why do the Sullys go to the water?
The family seeks refuge with the Metkayina, a reef-dwelling sea clan. Its leaders are chief Tonowari and his pregnant mate Ronal.
They agree to hide the Sullys, but warn that their forest skills mean little in the ocean. The move forces the children to start over. The Sully children are: They must learn diving, breath control, and bonding with water mounts called ilu.
- Neteyam, the responsible eldest
- Lo'ak, the impulsive middle son
- Tuk, the young daughter
- Kiri, the adopted daughter born from Grace Augustine's avatar
- Spider, a human boy left on Pandora who lives as part of the family
What changes the children in the reef?
Lo'ak befriends Tsireya, Aonung, and Rotxo, the chief's children. After a cruel hazing incident, Lo'ak swims alone and meets Payakan, a young tulkun. The tulkun are large, intelligent whale-like beings bonded to the Metkayina. Payakan is an outcast because he attacked whalers who killed his mother.
Lo'ak bonds with him despite the taboo. Kiri also bonds deeply with the reef and shows a strong link to Eywa, the planetary life force. Her link turns dangerous when she has a seizure under the clan's spirit tree. Norm and Max, human scientists, suggest she needs medical testing. Neytiri refuses to let humans take her.
How does the final battle unfold?
Human whalers led by Captain Scoresby hunt tulkun for a valuable brain fluid. They kill a tulkun close to Tsireya's family to lure the Na'vi. Quaritch captures Lo'ak, Tuk, and Tsireya during the hunt. Neteyam frees his siblings but is shot by a soldier.
Jake, Neytiri, and the Metkayina attack the whaling ship. Neteyam dies in his parents' arms in the ship's hold. Neytiri, in grief, holds a knife to Spider's throat to force Quaritch to release Kiri. Jake and Quaritch fight hand to hand as the ship floods and sinks. Lo'ak rescues Tsireya underwater, Kiri guides Neytiri to Jake with glowing reef creatures, and Spider pulls Quaritch from the water.
What does the ending mean?
Spider saves Quaritch, his biological father, but refuses to join him. He returns to the Sullys while Quaritch escapes alone into the forest. The family buries Neteyam in a Metkayina funeral.
Tonowari accepts them fully as sea people after the battle. Jake drops his fugitive mindset and commits to defending his new home. The war is not over, but the theme is clear: family holds together under loss rather than running from it. Watch Payakan's exile and Kiri's seizure scenes again; both carry the setup for the next film.
