What Happens During the Battle of Hogwarts?

The battle begins after Harry is found in the castle and Voldemort demands his surrender. McGonagall leads the defense and shield charms cover the school. Death Eaters, giants, and spiders attack while students and Order members fight back. Ron and Hermione destroy the cup with a basilisk fang in the Chamber of Secrets.

Harry finds the diadem and Crabbe destroys it with cursed fire. Friends die in the fight, including Fred Weasley, Remus Lupin, and Nymphadora Tonks. Neville Longbottom kills Nagini with the Sword of Gryffindor during the final assault. Molly Weasley defeats Bellatrix in a duel to protect Ginny. The castle falls into ruin, but Voldemort loses the anchors that kept him alive.

Why Does Harry Survive in the Forest?

Severus Snape dies protecting Harry and gives him memories to view in a Pensieve. The memories show Snape loved Harry's mother and worked against Voldemort for years. They also show Harry carries a piece of Voldemort's soul and must die to remove it. Harry walks into the Forbidden Forest and lets Voldemort strike him with the Killing Curse.

He wakes in a bright, station-like place and meets Albus Dumbledore. Dumbledore explains Voldemort destroyed his own Horcrux inside Harry, so Harry can choose to return. Harry chooses to go back and pretends to be dead while Hagrid carries him to the castle. Narcissa Malfoy feels his heartbeat but lies to Voldemort to protect her own son. Her lie lets Harry re-enter the battle alive and unseen.

What Does the Final Duel and Epilogue Mean?

Harry reveals he is alive and Neville's strike has left Voldemort mortal. Harry also owns the Elder Wand by right because he disarmed Draco Malfoy, its prior master. The wand refuses to kill its true owner, so Voldemort's curse rebounds and destroys him. Harry then snaps the Elder Wand and throws the pieces away to prevent future abuse.

Ron and Hermione survive, and Hogwarts begins to rebuild after great loss. The power of the Hallows fades, while friendship and responsibility remain. Nineteen years later, Harry and Ginny send their son Albus to Hogwarts. Draco Malfoy does the same with his own son on the platform. Albus fears placement in Slytherin, and Harry tells him choice matters more than the house.
