Blade Runner 2049 follows K, a replicant blade runner, who uncovers proof that a replicant gave birth and searches for the child. He learns he is not that child, then reunites the father, Rick Deckard, with his daughter Ana in the final scene.
A replicant is a bioengineered human-like being built for labor and obedience. A blade runner hunts older or rogue replicants. This story takes place thirty years after the first film.

What Does K Uncover?
K works for the Los Angeles police as a newer Nexus-9 model built to obey. His first case leads him to a farm where he retires Sapper Morton, an older Nexus-8 hiding off the grid. Buried nearby, forensic scans find bones from a female replicant who died in childbirth. Records identify the remains as Rachael, the experimental replicant from the first film.
Her child is impossible under known science and threatens the line between human and replicant. Niander Wallace, who makes new replicants, wants the child to unlock mass reproduction. His enforcer Luv shadows K and kills to protect that secret. Three groups want different outcomes from the same secret.

Why Is the Child Called a Miracle?
The child was born to Rachael and Rick Deckard, the former blade runner from the first film. A natural replicant birth suggests replicants can multiply without factories or owners. That possibility frightens humans, excites Wallace, and gives enslaved replicants hope for freedom. The trail points to Ana Stelline, a designer who creates implanted memories for replicants.
She lives apart in a sterile chamber because of an immune disorder. Her work explains why many replicants carry rich childhood memories that never happened to them. Wallace sees the birth as a manufacturing breakthrough. The underground sees it as proof of a soul. K sees it as a personal question about his own past.
Is K the Miracle Child?
K carries a vivid memory of hiding a carved wooden horse in a furnace as a hunted orphan boy. Replicant memories are normally implants, so a real memory would mean he was born, not made. He follows the horse clue to a ruined San Diego orphanage and finds records matching his memory date. The records were altered to hide the girl and show a boy. The horse memory is genuine, but it belongs to Ana, not K.
Ana implants her own true memories into replicants, and K received this one. His sense of being chosen was planted. That reveal breaks K. His lover Joi, an adaptive hologram, is destroyed by Luv. His mission, identity, and companion all collapse in quick succession.
How Does the Ending Resolve K and Deckard?
K finds Deckard hiding in abandoned Las Vegas and brings him to Wallace. Deckard refuses to reveal the child, so Wallace sends Luv to take Deckard off-world for harsh questioning. K intercepts their shuttle, kills Luv, and rescues Deckard.
K then drives Deckard to Stelline's laboratory instead of killing him as ordered. Deckard meets his adult daughter for the first time. K stays outside on the steps and lies down as snow falls.
