Where to stream Hayao Miyazaki movies: the full list
Eleven of these films come from Studio Ghibli’s own list of its works, which credits Miyazaki as director on each; the years are the Japanese release years Ghibli gives. The twelfth, Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979), was made before Ghibli existed; the Academy Museum describes it as Miyazaki’s debut. Ghibli’s list also includes On Your Mark (1995), a film of 6 minutes 48 seconds set to a CHAGE&ASKA song and shown with Whisper of the Heart; as a short, it is left out here, along with his TV work. “Rent or buy” lists the main digital stores; disc retailers are not included.

How Ghibli began
Ghibli’s own history page says the studio was set up in 1985, while Castle in the Sky was in production, following the success of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind; the publisher Tokuma Shoten, which had made Nausicaä, led the effort. Isao Takahata produced both of those films. According to the same page, Nausicaä drew 915,000 viewers in Japanese cinemas in 1984 and Castle in the Sky 775,000 in 1986, and the name “Ghibli” is a hot wind that blows across the Sahara; an Italian reconnaissance plane of the Second World War carried the same name, and Miyazaki, an airplane enthusiast, knew it and chose it for the studio.
Ghibli’s works list credits Miyazaki with the original story, screenplay and direction on most of his films there, with producer, screenplay and direction on Kiki’s Delivery Service, and with screenplay and direction on Howl’s Moving Castle. It dates My Neighbor Totoro to April 16, 1988, the same day as Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies; Ghibli’s history page notes the two were released as a double bill. His most recent film, The Boy and the Heron, opened in Japan on July 14, 2023.
For a first viewing, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle are good places to start. Our ranking of Studio Ghibli movies by worldwide box office puts them in context, and our pages on Spirited Away’s box office and The Boy and the Heron’s earnings go deeper on two of them.
