Will the Na’vi Split Into Factions?
In the Avatar universe, the Na’vi have long stood united against human invaders from the Resources Development Administration, or RDA. Led by Jake Sully and Neytiri, clans like the Omatikaya fight to protect Pandora’s forests and resources like unobtanium. But recent stories show cracks forming in Na’vi unity. For the first time, some Na’vi are turning against their own kind and even teaming up with humans.
Take the Mangkwan clan from https://james-camerons-avatar.fandom.com/wiki/Avatar_Wiki. Their home in Pandora’s volcanic regions was wiped out by a massive fire from a natural disaster. Leader Varang watched her forest burn to ashes, leaving her Hometree covered in soot. In their grief, the Mangkwan chose to abandon Eywa, the goddess-like force that connects all Na’vi life through neural bonds called tsaheylu. These bonds let Na’vi link with animals, plants, and each other, but the Mangkwan rejected that harmony.
Now, in Avatar: Fire and Ash, released just days ago on December 19, 2025, the Mangkwan hunt Jake Sully’s family. They side with the RDA, bringing ruthless tactics to the fight. This marks a huge shift. No longer do all Na’vi share the same goal of defending Pandora. The Mangkwan see humans as allies against their suffering, splitting the Na’vi into those loyal to Eywa and those driven by revenge.
The video game Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora echoes this divide in its From the Ashes expansion. Here, the Ash clan joins the RDA after peace briefly returns to the Western Frontier. These Na’vi push for total destruction of their rivals, showing how loss and anger can fracture even a spiritually linked people.
Na’vi society relies on clans living in balance with Pandora’s wildlife, from direhorses to ikran flying creatures. They bond for life with mates and connect to Eywa via the Tree of Souls. But disasters like volcanoes test that unity. For more on the Avatar franchise’s core conflicts, check https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_(franchise).
