Will Spider Side With Quaritch in Avatar 4?
Fans of the Avatar series are buzzing about what happens next with Spider Socorro, the human teen raised by the Sully family but born to Colonel Miles Quaritch. In Avatar: Fire and Ash, just released, Spider gains a big upgrade: he can now breathe Pandora’s air without a mask. This change, shown in the film’s ending, pulls him deeper into Na’vi life while tying him closer to the Sullys, who fully accept him as family. Yet his real dad, Quaritch, lives on in a Na’vi body, working with the ruthless RDA corporation to take over the planet.
Spider’s loyalty feels torn. Actor Jack Champion, who plays him, calls it a “split loyalty” in recent talks. One side is Jake Sully, his foster dad, and the Na’vi way of life. The other is Quaritch, the brutal soldier who fathered him and came back from death. Spider has disowned Quaritch in the past, sticking with the heroes, but their bond keeps pulling at him. James Cameron, the director, even tried cutting Spider’s big role from Fire and Ash because filming a human among blue giants was tough, but kept him for his key spot in the story.
Quaritch is changing too. He teams up with Varang, leader of the fiery Ash People, who hate Eywa and want to burn everything. Their link is not sweet romance. Stephen Lang, Quaritch’s actor, describes it as electric but cold, more about power and control. Varang gets RDA weapons; Quaritch gets a spot in Na’vi world. Some fans spot hints of a twist: a YouTube clip from the movie teases them getting close enough for a half-sibling for Spider in Avatar 4. That family shock could push Spider toward his dad.
Still, Quaritch fights for humans colonizing Pandora, clashing with Spider’s Na’vi roots. The Inverse breakdown of Fire and Ash’s end says Quaritch might get a redemption arc. His hate for Jake “going native” fades as he lives like a Na’vi himself. Spider’s choice could force Quaritch to switch sides, or drag Spider into the villain camp. Screen Rant notes Varang and Quaritch both survive, setting them up as threats in Avatar 4.
Right now, Spider stands firm with the Sullys. But with Quaritch alive, Varang plotting, and possible new family ties, Avatar 4 could test him hard. His split heart makes him the story’s wildcard.
