Avatar: Fire and Ash Release Date Confirmed
Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in James Cameron’s Avatar franchise, is moving forward with its scheduled December 19, 2025 release date in the United States. The film had its world premiere at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on December 1, 2025, marking a significant milestone for the highly anticipated sequel.
The journey to this release date has been lengthy. The film was originally scheduled for December 2015 before Cameron decided to push it back multiple times. Throughout the years, the release date shifted to 2016, 2017, and 2018. In April 2016, when Cameron announced four Avatar sequels, a new target of December 2020 was set. The following year brought another adjustment to December 17, 2021. Most recently, the film experienced nine total delays as the crew focused on writing, pre-production, and visual effects work to meet Cameron’s exacting standards.
The film is being distributed by 20th Century Studios and produced by Lightstorm Entertainment. James Cameron directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, working from a story developed with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. The cast includes Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, and supporting actors including Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, and many others.
Avatar: Fire and Ash picks up after the events of Avatar: The Way of Water. The story follows Jake Sully and Neytiri as they face a new threat on Pandora in the form of the Ash People, a violent Na’vi tribe led by the ruthless Varang. The Sully family must fight for their survival and the future of Pandora as they confront challenges that test them emotionally and physically.
The theatrical trailer was released on September 25, 2025, giving audiences their first look at the film’s scope and scale. Additional promotional materials and teasers have been released since then, building anticipation for the December release.
Looking ahead, Cameron has already planned two more sequels in the Avatar franchise. Avatar 4 is scheduled for release in 2029, while Avatar 5 is set for 2031. These future installments are currently in various stages of production.
With the world premiere completed and the release date holding firm, Avatar: Fire and Ash is on track to arrive in theaters on December 19, 2025. Tickets are available through various platforms including Fandango and AMC Theatres.
