Inglourious Basterds ends in a wild burst of fire and revenge inside Shoshanna’s cinema in Nazi-occupied Paris. The story builds to two separate plots crashing together during a big movie premiere for a Nazi propaganda film.
Shoshanna Dreyfus runs the theater. Years earlier, as a girl, she saw her family murdered by Hans Landa, the clever Nazi officer known as the Jew Hunter. At the same time, the Basterds, a team of American soldiers led by Lt. Aldo Raine, sneak in disguised as Italians. They include Sgt. Donny Donowitz and Sgt. Hugo Stiglitz. Their plan is simpler: explode the theater with hidden dynamite strapped to their bodies. They sit near Hitler and his crew, chatting in broken Italian. Tension rises when Bridget von Hammersmark, their Nazi spy contact, gets exposed. Donowitz and Stiglitz empty clips into Nazi leaders amid screams. Shoshanna’s giant face burns on screen as her plan succeeds. Outside, Aldo and his last man escape into the woods. Landa catches them but makes a deal. He surrenders to save his own skin, demanding a promotion and pardon. Aldo carves his Nazi-marking swastika on Landa’s forehead anyway, saying it proves he’s a Jew hunter forever. The screen fades on Landa’s marked face and Aldo’s calm words.
This ending flips history. Hitler dies in a blaze, not a bunker.
