Does Quaritch Start to Identify as Na’vi?
Colonel Miles Quaritch, the tough human soldier from the first Avatar movie, comes back in Avatar: Fire and Ash as a Na’vi recom. A recom is a Na’vi body grown with his human mind uploaded inside after his death in the second film. This new blue-skinned form puts him right in the middle of Pandora’s wild world, and it starts to change him in big ways.
In the story, Quaritch lives among the Na’vi, fights like them, and even forms bonds that pull him closer to their ways. Actor Stephen Lang, who plays Quaritch, talked about this in a recent interview. He said the transformation into a Na’vi recom has altered how Quaritch sees the world. Quaritch realizes he needs to adapt to Pandora’s primal energy, and he gets more comfortable being Na’vi. You can watch Lang explain it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmnuszW6cQE.
Jake Sully notices this shift too. Both Jake and Quaritch are now in Na’vi bodies, but for different reasons. Jake chose it long ago to live fully with the Na’vi. Quaritch was brought back this way by humans. Jake tells him, “You’ve got new eyes, Colonel. All you gotta do is open them.” He says Quaritch can leave behind the destructive human memories because they belong to a dead man. Quaritch is free now. Quaritch still leads raids and teams up with a fierce Na’vi leader named Varang. They share a close, physical connection, with her drawing him into her clan. But even in these moments, his actions show Na’vi traits like raw power and group loyalty. Pandora itself plays a role. The planet’s influence, along with Na’vi connections like his son Spider, softens Quaritch’s rigid views. Their rivalry with Jake turns deeper and more personal as both embrace Na’vi life. Quaritch does not fully abandon his goals, but his Na’vi body and experiences make him identify more with their world. He moves, thinks, and connects in Na’vi ways, hinting at a slow shift from human colonel to something closer to the blue people he once fought.
