Smoke in the Avatar movies has come a long way with each new film. In the first Avatar from 2009, smoke was basic. Software tracks fuel, oxygen, and heat to make smoke swirl, expand, and fade just like real combustion. This is a huge jump from the 2D fire overlays in the original Avatar. In The Way of Water, smoke handled reflections off water. Now, it bends light in alien atmospheres with ray-tracing for shadows and glows.
