Avatar 3 Market Share of the Weekend Box Office

Avatar 3 took the top spot at the weekend box office with a strong 58 percent market share. The latest James Cameron film pulled in about 95 million dollars over the three days ending Sunday. That figure comes from early estimates by box office trackers. It beat out the rest of the field even as holiday crowds filled theaters.

The movie stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana back as Jake and Neytiri on Pandora. This third entry dives deeper into the Na’vi world with new floating islands and sea creatures. Critics gave it solid reviews, averaging 82 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans showed up in big numbers, helping it claim more than half the total box office pie.

Second place went to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with 18 percent market share and 32 million dollars. The family hit drew younger viewers during the holiday stretch. Moana 2 held third at 12 percent with 22 million. It kept sailing strong after topping charts last weekend.

Overall, the top 10 films earned around 164 million dollars combined. Avatar 3 grabbed the biggest slice thanks to its 3D screens and IMAX showings. Theaters reported high attendance in major cities like Los Angeles and New York. Smaller releases like a horror flick in fourth spot took just 4 percent.

Disney led studios with two films in the top three. Avatar 3, from 20th Century Studios under Disney, boosted the company’s weekend haul. Paramount’s Sonic sequel added to the mix. Numbers could shift a bit with final tallies on Monday from Box Office Mojo.
