Avatar: The Way of Water sets up the Sully family’s story on Pandora, but the real family separation happens in the next movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash. The whole family goes along to make sure Spider gets there safely. But disaster strikes during the trip. A fierce Na’vi tribe called the Mangkwan, also known as the Ash People, attacks the convoy. These raiders reject Eywa, the spiritual force connecting all life on Pandora, and live a violent life led by their matriarch Varang. They set the ships on fire, loot everything, and kill many. Jake ends up captured by RDA forces, the humans trying to take over Pandora. Quaritch, now in a Na’vi body, finds him. They form a shaky team-up because Quaritch also wants to save Spider, his biological son. Neytiri and the other kids face their own dangers. Spider gets taken for testing by RDA scientists.
