Departed Elevator Scene Explained
In the tense final moments of The Departed, undercover cop Billy Costigan finally corners mob mole Colin Sullivan on a rooftop. Costigan, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, has solid proof that Sullivan is Frank Costello’s rat inside the police force. He cuffs Sullivan at gunpoint and calls in backup from his old police academy buddy, Trooper Brown.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Departed[3]
Brown shows up fast, gun drawn, backing Costigan’s claim. The two standoff with Sullivan, who looks trapped. Costigan decides to take Sullivan down in the elevator alone to the lobby for booking. Brown stays behind, radioing for more help. As the elevator doors slide shut, you can feel the pressure building. Costigan tells Sullivan he’s done, with evidence to bury him.https://en.namu.wiki/w/%EB%94%94%ED%8C%8C%ED%8B%B0%EB%93%9C[1]
The ride down is dead silent. Then the doors ding open on the first floor. Bang. Costigan drops dead, shot clean through the head before he can even step out. The killer is Trooper Barrigan, another hidden Costello mole in the state police that no one saw coming. Barrigan steps in cool as ice, gun still smoking.https://the-departed.fandom.com/wiki/Billy_Costigan[4]
Barrigan wastes no time. Brown arrives from a different elevator, and Barrigan shoots him too. He tells Sullivan they have to stick together now, since Costello’s crew is crumbling. Sullivan plays along, grabs Barrigan’s gun to “wipe it clean,” then blasts him point blank. Sullivan frames the whole mess on Barrigan as Costello’s lone cop spy.https://en.namu.wiki/w/%EB%94%94%ED%8C%8C%ED%8B%B0%EB%93%9C[1]
Sullivan heads to his apartment, thinking he’s in the clear. But waiting there is Sergeant Dignam, gun ready, out for revenge over Costigan and the betrayed cops. Sullivan mutters “Okay” and gets shot dead. The camera pans to a rat scurrying on his balcony, tying back to the film’s theme of rats everywhere.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Departed[3]
This elevator twist hits hard because it’s so sudden. One second Costigan seems to win, the next he’s gone. It flips everything, showing no one is safe in this web of lies. The quick cuts and that ding make it stick with you, like the shock in other films where doors open to death.https://confusingmiddle.com/2026/01/02/24-movie-scenes-i-wish-i-could-experience-for-the-first-time-again/[2]
