# Avatar: Fire and Ash Parental Advisory Breakdown
Avatar: Fire and Ash arrived in theaters as the latest installment in James Cameron’s science fiction franchise, carrying a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association. The rating comes with specific content warnings that parents should understand before deciding whether the film is appropriate for their children.
The Motion Picture Association rated the film PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, bloody images, some strong language, thematic elements and suggestive material. This means parental guidance is suggested for children under 13, though the film is not restricted to adults.
Violence represents the most significant content concern in Avatar: Fire and Ash. The film features extended battle scenes where characters use guns, knives, bows and arrows, spears, and other weapons to shoot, slash and stab one another. According to parental guides, there are many war scenes throughout the movie, with characters getting shot with arrows and sometimes struggling to remove them. These scenes are described as very hard to watch. The film also includes suicide references and an attempted suicide scene. One particularly disturbing element involves a child being held through a gun. A character uses special strands of hair to kill Na’vi, and there are massive bursts of fire that consume groups of enemies. Ships are battered by gigantic creatures, and various machines and vehicles explode, sometimes killing or injuring others. Characters are impaled by spears and shot in the throat or chest by arrows. While the blood is intense and very realistic in some scenes, there is little or rarely none in others.
Language in the film reaches moderate levels. The movie contains approximately 19 to 20 obscenities, including many instances of the word that starts with “s,” plus one strong profanity mentioning the name of Jesus. This language content places it above what younger children typically encounter in family entertainment.
Sexual content and nudity remain mild throughout the film. There is no sex depicted on screen, though there are some suggestive elements and references to sensuality involving a new Na’vi character described as having lusty ways.
Substance use is also mild. The film contains minimal depictions of alcohol, drugs, or smoking.
Frightening and intense scenes occur at moderate levels. Characters experience a fantastical form of torture at the hands of their captor. A boy repeatedly experiences breathing difficulties. The overall intensity of the battle sequences and action scenes may be disturbing for sensitive viewers.
The film runs longer than three hours, with many reviewers noting that the lengthy climactic battle becomes repetitious and tiring after a while. This extended runtime combined with the intensity of the content means younger viewers may struggle with the pacing and sustained action.
Different countries have assigned their own ratings to the film. In Italy it received a T rating, Lithuania assigned N-13, Luxembourg and Malta gave it 12, the Netherlands rated it 12, New Zealand assigned M, and Norway gave it a 15 cinema rating. The Philippines rated it PG. The Raising Children Network in Australia recommends the film is unsuitable for children aged under 12 and suggests parental guidance for children aged up to 14 years.
The film also contains thematic elements related to nature worship and environmentalism. There are references to an impersonal nature goddess or All-Mother who is worshiped by the indigenous people and their ancestors. The movie includes some morally uplifting content about family and caring for orphans, along with light Christian allusions.
Parents considering whether to allow their children to watch Avatar: Fire and Ash should weigh the intense violence, moderate language, and frightening scenes against their child’s maturity level and sensitivity to action-heavy content. The PG-13 rating indicates that some material may be inappropriate for children under 13, making parental discretion important.
