Are the Fire Na’vi Villains or Allies?
In the world of Avatar, the Fire Na’vi, also called the Ash People or Mangkwan clan, live near volcanoes on Pandora. They first show up in the upcoming movie Avatar: Fire and Ash. Led by a tough leader named Varang, this group acts very different from the forest Na’vi we know from the earlier films. The story picks up after Jake Sully and his family settle with the Metkayina clan. They face sadness over the death of their son Neteyam. Neytiri starts to hate humans more. Then, flying merchant ships come by, and the family makes Spider leave with them. The Fire Na’vi ambush these ships. They reject Eywa, the great life force that connects most Na’vi. Varang is their tsahik, a spiritual leader, and she guides them with a harsh view shaped by tough times.
Director James Cameron describes Varang as hardened by hardship. She will do anything for her people, even acts others see as evil. She has a dominating style, full of fury and layers of drive. Her clan follows a belief that fire is the only pure thing on Pandora. They even welcome Na’vi killers into their group. This sets them against Jake’s family and the other clans. So far, the Fire Na’vi look like the bad guys in this part of the tale. They attack without mercy and turn away from Eywa’s balance. Unlike the allies in past movies, like the Omatikaya or Metkayina, these Na’vi bring conflict through violence and a fire-worshipping faith. Their volcano life has made them fierce survivors who clash with everyone else.
