Will Avatar 4 Take Place on Earth?
Fans of the Avatar movies have been wondering about the settings for the upcoming films. The series so far has focused on Pandora, a beautiful moon far from our solar system. For more details on the franchise, check out the Wikipedia page on the Avatar franchise.
The first two movies, Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water, both happen on Pandora in the mid-22nd century. The story follows the Na’vi people and humans fighting over this distant world. Avatar 3, called Avatar: Fire and Ash, comes out on December 19, 2025. It picks up just one year after the second film, in the year 2171. This movie introduces a new group of Na’vi called the Ash People. They live near volcanoes on Pandora. James Cameron wrote and directed it, with stars like Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana returning.
Now, about Avatar 4. It is set for release on December 21, 2029. Producers have already filmed about a third of it. This was done early because of a six-year time jump in the story’s first part. Child actors are growing up, so they shot those scenes ahead of time. Principal photography started in 2022, but Cameron paused the rest until after Avatar 3 wraps up. All the info points to Avatar 4 staying on Pandora, just like the first three films. There is no word from the creators about Earth showing up in this one.
Earth does play a role later, though. Avatar 5 is planned for 2031. That film will bring back Neytiri to our home planet. It might be called Avatar: The Quest for Eywa. So, if you are hoping for Earth scenes soon, you will have to wait past Avatar 4.
The Avatar series keeps expanding with new clans and bigger stories on Pandora. Avatar 4 builds right on the action from Fire and Ash, keeping the focus on that alien moon.
