Will Avatar 4 Introduce a New Planet?
Fans of the Avatar series are buzzing with questions about what comes next after Avatar: Fire and Ash. One big topic is whether Avatar 4 will take us to a whole new planet beyond Pandora. The short answer is no. All signs point to more adventures right on Pandora itself, with fresh parts of the moon to explore.
James Cameron, the director behind the Avatar movies, has shared some clues about Avatar 4. He plans to show off colder areas of Pandora, like icy spots similar to the Arctic or Antarctic. In a 2025 interview with IGN while promoting his penguin documentary, Cameron said he wrote scripts for Avatar 4 and 5 years ago. He knows the full story and teased that Pandora has many biomes, including deserts, polar regions, and more. “We’ll see a lot more of that as we go along,” he noted. Avatar 4 is set for release on December 21, 2029. Part of the film is already shot, with production picking up soon after Fire and Ash hits theaters. There will be a time jump of several years, letting younger characters like the Sully kids grow up. New human characters will appear too, and expect frostier settings on Pandora. The story picks up new threads from Fire and Ash. For example, Spider, the human boy raised by the Na’vi, can now breathe Pandora’s air thanks to Kiri’s help. This grabs the attention of the RDA, the human colonizers who want to take over the moon. Villain Quaritch might return for more fights against the Na’vi. We’ll also see bigger roles for groups like the Wind Traders, introduced in the third movie. Details on these plot points come from this GamesRadar update.
Rumors have floated about visits to Earth in later films. Producer Jon Landau once hinted that Avatar 5 might partly happen there, showing Neytiri that not all humans are bad. Overpopulation and resource shortages on Earth could tie into the plot. But for Avatar 4, everything stays on Pandora. No new planet is planned. This Primetimer article covers the renewal status and Earth teases.
Cameron has filmed about a third of Avatar 4 already, matching the aging of child actors. He calls it the start of a new story arc for the Sully family, separate from the first three movies. While success of Fire and Ash will decide if it all moves forward, the focus remains on Pandora’s untapped wonders.
