What order should you watch it in?
Release order or chronological order? For most franchises the answer is not the same, and picking wrong can spoil a reveal the filmmakers spent three films setting up. Choose a series and see both, with a straight recommendation.
Release order or chronological?
There is no universal answer, but there is a reliable rule of thumb.
Release order is usually right
Filmmakers build each entry assuming you have seen the previous ones. Reveals, callbacks and even basic exposition are pitched at that audience. Watching a prequel first hands you information a later film was written to withhold — the clearest example being the parentage reveal in The Empire Strikes Back, which chronological Star Wars order gives away before you start.
When chronological helps
It works for series that are genuinely episodic, for a rewatch when you already know the twists, and for franchises whose prequels were designed as entry points. It rarely helps on a first watch of a series with a running mystery.
Some franchises have no meaningful chronological order at all — the entries are self-contained or the timeline contradicts itself. Those are marked as release-order only.
