Instruments follow technology
Analogue synthesisers became affordable in the late 1970s and dominated the 80s. Sample libraries changed orchestral scoring in the 2000s. Programmed electronic scores are largely a post-2010 phenomenon.
Songs follow the market
The soundtrack album drove the montage-with-a-hit convention through the 1980s. Curated period needle-drops became a directorial signature after the mid-1990s.
