Poster design follows fashions as strictly as clothing does. The layout, the palette and the typography together place a film within a decade or two — and the poster is often the only thing people retain.
Why posters date so precisely
Poster art is commercial design, and commercial design follows fashion harder than films do. A poster is often easier to date than the film it advertises.
Layout conventions
The floating-heads collage dominated the 1970s and 80s. The split two-hander belongs to the 1990s. Minimalist single-object posters with acres of negative space are a 2010s art-house habit that blockbusters later borrowed.
Print and process
Painted illustration gave way to photographic composites in the 1980s, then to digital compositing in the 2000s. Chrome lettering needs airbrush or early digital work, which brackets it tightly.
